Make sure to download Multiprofiler (free) from too. It will take a bit to wrap your head around all of it's flexibility. I dont know what you currently use but it will probably be a revelation Several locals also have them or the 24" version and speak very highly of them. The main reasons I bought it were that I wanted a reliable, color-accurate, aRGB monitor and, other than Eizo, this one seems to bubble to the top everywhere I look. Still, it might be useful to have it connected simultaneously to my two Macs or to take advantage of other features. I don't know that I'll need all of the monitor's flexibility that's only a small part of what I bought it for. I felt lucky that the PA272's price was down just now. I've really liked the monitor-far better than the Apple Cinema Displays I have-but alas, its illumination has become noticeably uneven and it's started showing some black streaking (far poorer durability than my ACDs). Thanks Howard! I didn't know about Multiprofiler, although it may be mentioned or included with my monitor when UPS gets around to delivering it. This however is typical of sRGB spec'd displays.īut If you are looking for other displays however, Eizo CG and the higher end NECs are the way to go, as they have their own color management controls separate from Apple ColorSync. The weak areas of the extremely saturated cyans and the green and blues that are close to cyan. The 27" iMac displays are extremely stable and depending on the color produce a gamut that at least equals the sRGB color space gamut and I some colors exceeds it.

Which i1 colorimeter or spectrophotometer are you using? I'm not having the problems you describe using an i1 Display Pro, but earlier i1 Display colorimeter units and the earlier iterations of i1 Pro spectrophotometer were designed for CRT and fluorescent backlit LCD technology, while all of the newer (since late2009) iMacs use White LED backlight technology. I think the problem you've mentioned is more to do with poor OSX support in the Dell software.

With Spectraview II to calibrate my PA271W, my prints look just like what I see on screen on either Windows 7 and OSX. If you were really serious, you'd be using an NEC or Eizo monitor. I use an NEC PA271W purchased used and it's very hard to use consumer-grade or even "pro" Dell monitors for photo editing after you've used the cream of the crop stuff. The NEC LCDxx90WUXI series also worth looking at (this is previous generation to PA-series, still 97% AdobeRGB) and trying to get at a bargain price. I have seen used Eizo CG275 go for $800-900, and NEC PA271W for $700 (both 27" monitors, same LCD panel, ~97% AdobeRGB coverage). You can't get a Eizo ColorEdge or NEC PA-series monitor new for <$1000. Other makes offer wide gamut monitors but these two brands are a level above in terms of their display quality, and their ability to finetune the colour calibration directly with the monitor hardware. There are really only 2 makers to look at: Eizo and NEC. I would really like to stay under $1,000.Ĭan anyone recommend something that would work under these parameters? and the new monitor for more precise color correction etc. My ideal would be to hook this new monitor up with my iMac to create a dual monitor system, whereby I can use my iMac for email, etc. I've finally come to the conclusion that Macs simply cant get the level of calibration required to run a pro studio, and am researching purchasing an additional Monitor for such. I calibrate weekly with the Xrite i1, and yet I still can't get a satisfactory color balance. I recently upgraded to a new iMac (3.2 GHz Intel Core i5), this is the one right before the Retina Display was released. Which you will make up in saved ink and less aggravation. I often process images on a Mac using OSX.

It is my impression that part of the issue is that video drivers and printer drivers are also more sophisticated on the Windows side because the differences in print qualities should not simply be explained by the more limited gamut of OSX color management. You can compare printing via the same monitor, Photoshop and calibrator via both OSX and Windows and prove it for yourself.

The Dell software with your calibrator utilizing the 14 bit calibration built into the monitor (OSX can not use that color depth information) will yield prints on the first try with better light/dark values and image detail then you can achieve with OSX unless you tweak excessively for a best-guess workflow. You cannot run Windows for this purpose as a virtual machine with Parallels or its ilk.
